Neutral Density Filter Vs Polarizer
- In photography and optics, a neutral density filter or ND filter can be a colorless (clear) or grey filter. An ideal neutral density filter reduces and/or modifies intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, giving no changes in hue of color rendition.
- Colorless filters that reduce the amount of light in controlled degrees. (Camera/Lighting)
- Represents a measure of how dark the color is. The lightest possible value corresponds to a neutral density of 0.0 and is equivalent to pure white; while the value 3.294 is roughly equivalent to the sum of 100% of each of the CMYK inks and can be interpreted as Registration Color.
- A light filter which only allows light waves of a certain rotation through. Polarized material with perpendicular filtering is used in LCDs to enclose the liquid crystal.
- A stretched polymer which transmits light in only one axis. A typical display has polarizers on the front and back.
- A polarizer is a device that converts a beam of electromagnetic waves (light) of undefined or mixed polarization into a beam with well-defined polarization. The common types of polarizers are linear polarizers and circular polarizers.

The Cokin Creative Filter System consists of a rectangular plastic filter holder with four slots (one for Cokin rotating filters and three for rectangular ones), a variety of optional adapter rings which click into place and rotate, and many optical resin filters. The "P" series covers diameters from 48-82mm, and is generally preferred for everything, particularly wide-angle lenses. Over 100 filters and a wide range of accessories are available for each system, i.e. modular lens hoods, lens caps, and storage boxes. The Cokin P Filter-Holder is the ideal Cokin Filter-Holder to avoid vignetting on APS and full frame lenses for digital cameras. Up to three filters can be used to create a unique effect. Both the photos on the left are taken with a circular polariser, while the photos on the right are taken using a graduated neutral density filter.
As you can hopefully see, the polariser cuts back the glare on the water and makes the clouds stand out more in a blue sky, but the colours seem better using the gndfilter (this may just be personal preference) and the sky is not so flat. I have left all these photos as they were taken in the camera, both using f11, ISO100, standard contrast and high saturation.
Just thought it might be interesting for people to see the difference, as most only really use one or the other :) Also, I get a lot of questions as to why I prefer to use a gnd filter rather than the more popular polariser - this may help explain why (or not!)

Since the Vari-N-Duo covers densities from 2-2/3 to 8 f-stops, it replaces multiple solid neutral density filters and possibly even your old polarizer, saving money, time and space in your bag. Instead of framing and focusing your image through a dark conventional solid ND filter, simplly focus and frame with the Vari-ND set at its minimum density, then rotate the outer ring to the desired density. And while moving objects will be blurred, the Vari-ND maintains sharp optical resolution in the scene’s non-moving areas, provided the camera is on a firm tripod.
